The Monaghan United / Cavan FP SSE Airtricity Under 17’s side welcomed Bohemians FC to Gortakeegan on Saturday afternoon for their final home League game of this season. “Bohs” are currently in 2nd place in the Northern Section of the League and were on a decent run of results whereas the “Partners” were coming off a bad result away to Sligo Rovers last weekend. The game was barely 30 seconds old when Dean Connolly won possession in midfield before passing to his midfield colleague Cianan Kelly who slotted a perfect ball down the right touchline and into the stride of Jordan Corraway who controlled before flashing a ball across the “Bohs” 6 yard box where Ify Nzewi had the easiest task to drill the ball home to give the home side the perfect start.

This stunned the visitors and it took them several minutes to get up to the pace of the game but they eventually began to cause problems for the “Partners”. They could have equalised in the 14th minute when Brandon Kavanagh broke down the “Bohs” left wing and his cross was headed back by Aaron Lynch to Steven Nolan whose half volley was just wide of Luke Perkins goal. The game became end to end for the next 20 minutes with neither side really creating any clear-cut chances. In the 32nd minute Seosamh Sheerin broke clear in midfield before picking out Aaron Reilly on the right of the “Bohs” area. Reilly dropped his shoulder before drilling a ball across the box but there was no “Partners” player on hand to finish. A minute later they should have increased their lead when Connolly floated in a terrific cross into the heart of the Bohemians penalty area where Nzewi rose to head goalwards but “Bohs” Keeper Paul McCarthy stretched his big frame to claw the ball away from hitting the back of his net and was on hand again when the ball came back to Nzewi. Straight from the clearance the visitors raced forward and Luke Donohoe had to head behind for a corner from a dangerous cross by Aaron Townley. The respite wasn’t for long as the “Partners” failed to deal with the deliver and Jordan Maguire prodded the ball home from close range. They should have taken the lead within a minute from another corner. This time Shay Curley rose unmarked to head goal wards but his effort was cleared off the line by Karl Cosgrove and when his clearance was picked up by Connolly the “Partners” suddenly were threatening the “Bohs” goals but McCarthy was quick off his line to foil Reilly. “Bohs” had a shot from Dylan Thornton in the 43rd minute that Perkins had to deal with and as the half seemed to be coming to a conclusion with no further score, Cosgrove picked up possession in central midfield before racing forward passed 2 Bohemians players before delivering a clever ball into Reilly’s path. Reilly let the ball run across him before smashing a shot towards the far corner with the outside of his foot. McCarthy managed to get finger-tips to the ball but couldn’t prevent it nestling in the bottom corner for the “Partners” to regain the lead.

“Bohs” came out for the 2nd half on the front foot and Lynch almost grabbed an equaliser within a minute of the restart but his effort sailed just over Perkins crossbar. The Dublin side began to dominate possession and had the home side on the back foot. Perkins had to be sharp on numerous occasions as was the back 3 of Donohoe, Adam O’Connor and Cameron Dowd. The Keeper was however beaten in the 59th minute when Nolan let fly from 30 yards and the ball skipped into the bottom corner beyond Perkins reach. This seemed to spark the “Partners” into life and they almost regained the lead in the 63rd minute from a free-kick from Cosgrove which Dowd flicked towards goal only to see his effort crash off the underside of the crossbar before being cleared of the line by Andy Lyons. They created an even clearer cut opportunity 2 minutes later when Connolly released Nzewi 1-v-v1 with only McCarthy to beat but Nzewi got too much on his shot and it flashed over. “Bohs” again threatened in the 69th minute with a long range shot from substitute Lido Lotefa which Perkins had to have 2 attempts to gather. The “Partners” did restore their lead in the 73rd minute when Cosgrove again delivered an inviting cross into the “Bohs” area from a dead ball and Nzewi rose highest to power a downward header into the back of the net beyond McCarthy’s dive. The home side had to weather a barrage of pressure from “Bohs” for the next 20 minutes but seemed to have done enough to take the 3 points as the match was deep into stoppage time. Bohemians had a number of corners awarded to them which the “Partners” dealt well with but in the 94th minute Lotefa picked up a loose ball inside the “Partners” area and as Dowd stuck out a foot to seemingly clear the danger the striker went down for what the Referee deemed to be a penalty. Dowd was shown a second yellow card and Nolan made no mistake from the spot. The game ended shortly afterwards with no further score.
